Latina Inventor's Dream to grow her business

Hello!  My name is Hipatia Lopez. Born and Raised in New Jersey.  My parents are from Quito, Ecuador.  I am married with 3 children and currently have 2 Part time jobs plus I opened up my own business. My company H.L. Unico LLC was formed mainly because of my invention. I invented a kitchen utensil known as the “Empanada Fork” which is a pastry press. A brief description of my product: it makes fork like impressions on the dough to seal the edges. Also, when leant out to restaurants they used it for mashing as well.

My “idea” began around the kitchen table during the holiday season when my family and I were making one hundred empanadas. I was frustrated that it was taking so long to close them and my thumb started to hurt after a few.  *I wondered if a utensil existed that would help with the closing of the pastry to go faster and make them look great. I envisioned it and could not get it out of my head. I decided to move forward and now I have a design patent. My journey thus far has been a big learning experience but definitely worth the risk. I always knew I wanted to open my own business!

The funds I need would be for tooling cost and inventory of a different size of my utensil.  Right now - I only make the regular size and not the large ones.  Ideally, I would love to come out with 2 more sizes but in time.  I would love to do this in 2017.  I am beyond grateful for all the support.  I have learned that I am one of the .3% of Latina inventors that holds a patent in the USA.  I encourage other women to invent and follow their dreams.  #SiSePuede  Gracias!
