Four years ago, blogger and digital influencer Jewel Figueras was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. Since the surgery and subsequent chemotherapy treatments, she was active in creating awareness and raising funds for this cause. She was appointed as an Advocacy Leader for Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance and spent time on Capitol Hill talking to Congress about the disease. Indeed, she embraced the teal (the official color for ovarian cancer) with great energy and enthusiasm.
On January 10, 2017, Jewel lost her courageous battle to ovarian cancer. She was 53.
A gifted speaker and consummate networker who “never met a stranger,” Jewel was one of the most beloved multicultural community bloggers in the country and was especially close to the organizers of Hispanicize and Blogalicious.
In honor of Jewel and keeping her legacy and advocacy alive, the Hispanicize event, the nation’s largest annual gathering for Latino trendsetters and influencers, and FundLatinos have partnered to raise funds for the Ovarian Center Research Fund Alliance.
The joint fundraising initiative will mark the launch of the Jewel Award for Social Good, to be presented during the 2017 Hispanicize Tecla Awards. The nation’s highest honor for multicultural content creators, the Tecla Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday, April 6, 2017.
Jewel is survived by her husband Angel, children Dashaywn, 30, Jessica, 25 and Kendall, 21, her father Kenneth, mother Jewel (who she was named after) and her two brothers.
Your gift today will help support the fight against ovarian cancer in memory of Jewel Figueras. Together we can make a difference and help with ovarian cancer awareness and research.
